For our next concert, we're very excited to present a selection of popular music from the late Renaissance and Baroque periods. What kind of music did people enjoy outside of the courts of kings, queens, and nobles or the confines of the church - and often in defiance of these authorities?

Dances of the People celebrates the music of the people as played and sung - and above all, danced to - in taverns, halls, and homes. Exploring a broad selection of music from Germany, Scotland, Ireland, and England, we'll be playing music by Michael Praetorius, John Playford, as well as tunes that lie at the heart of today's folk music - Greensleeves, Scarborough Fair, and more.

We will accompany each piece with a little talk that aims to provide better context for the work, especially to us now in the 21st century - what did these songs and dances mean to the people who heard them for the first time? Why did some of them become so culturally influential in Europe? Why do we still dance to them today?
